Why Rush A Fraternity?
If you are new to the Greek System, you probably know very little about what fraternity life is all about. Sure, you see the parties and big events like homecoming. However, that is only a small part of what fraternity actually is. Phi Mu Alpha fraternity is a group of men with whom you share a special bond. You and your brothers share common experiences that shape your life and how you view others. Brotherhood transcends other friendships... it is stronger in ways you couldn't previously understand. Phi Mu Alpha fraternity is knowing that whatever happens to you, you will always have brothers who will stand behind you and support you. If you are having troubles with anything -- grades, girls, family -- your brothers will help you through them.
They will also be there to share your greatest moments. If you want to accomplish something great at Southeast, your brothers will be there to help you do it. Also, alumni of Phi Mu Alpha exist throughout the country. You will never have met many of them; nevertheless, they will be there for you as you enter the "real world." You experience the same rituals and learn the same secrets that your brothers experienced decades before. You become a part of something that is larger than the sum of its parts. Once you leave, it will still be there, and you will forever be a part of it. In a sense, Phi Mu Alpha makes you immortal at a university where it is very simple to be a number; another face in the crowd. Still don't understand? You never will unless you decide to make Phi Mu Alpha a part of your life. Come out and see what Phi Mu Alpha fraternity life at Winthrop is all about.
What Should I Act Like During Rush?
Be yourself! If you try to act differently during rush, or go out of your way to impress people, or "act cool," the brothers will see through it. The best way is to make friends and earn their respect is to act like you would any other day. The brothers are just as eager to meet you, as you are to meet them. You should not worry about feeling out of place!
Do I Have To Be A Music Major Or In A Music Ensemble?
Not at all! While we have several members who are in ensembles, bands, choirs, etc. It is not required to be in any of these groups to be in Phi Mu Alpha. If you just like music of any kind, you’ll enjoy Phi Mu Alpha. We have electric guitar/bass players, drum players, vocalists, men's choir groups that serenade sororities on campus, etc. But we also have brothers who just love listening to music and like hanging out with other guys who enjoy music too. Some of our chapter is not in any music ensemble at the University.
What About Academic?
Academics are a vital part of any fraternity, Phi Mu Alpha being no different. Phi Mu Alpha provides everything you need to be successful with your classes. In addition to requirements, Phi Mu Alpha encourages academic achievement throughout your time spent in the fraternity.
What Is Brotherhood?
Something that Phi Mu Alpha is particularly strong in is brotherhood. Brotherhood makes a fraternity work. It doesn’t matter if you’re studying or just hanging out, there is always a brother there for you. It is important for members to feel accepted and be a part of something will continue even after the college experience. Through such activities as tailgating, capture the flag, Sunday night chapter meetings, and brotherhood social events; Phi Mu Alpha promotes the forming of lifelong relationships between its members.
What About The Possibility Of Hazing?
Phi Mu Alpha is a 100% haze-free organization. We are committed to our new members' education and development and find hazing nothing more that a roadblock that has the potential to push our work back or even erase it. As a fraternity, we are here to teach responsibility, leadership, and friendship. New members meet each week with the Fraternal Educator Officer to learn about the university and the fraternity. We make the effort to make your transition from high school to college as easy as possible and do all this WITHOUT hazing. Along side our national documents, Winthrop University also has their own stance on hazing. This can be found on the Greek Life website
